“Je pénétrais dans un champ de conscience qui m’étais jusqu’alors interdit ou caché et je n’y reconnaissais rien. J’ai eu l’impression vertigineuse d’accéder à un nouvel étage de mon être. Je ne savais pas si j’étais mort ou si je venais de naître. Tout y était inouï et incertain. Je ne pouvais plus interpréter ce que je ressentais. J’avais un nouvel univers à déchiffrer dont chaque signe éait un miroir de ma perplexité. Je me suis dit, ou plutôt cela s’est dit à travers moi : Ma folie est le dernier rempart entre moi et une liberté totale. Qui cédera le premier ? Le rempart ? Moi ? Ou la Liberté ?”
The first time I went mad, I had the dizzying feeling of reaching a new level of my being. I was entering a field of consciousness which had so far remained forbidden or hidden, and I couldn’t recognize a thing there. I couldn’t tell if I was dead or if I’d just been born. Everything was unheard-of and undecided. I could no longer interpret my sensations. I had a new universe to decipher, every sign of it a mirror of my own perplexity. I told myself, or rather it told itself through me: My madness is the last remaining battlement separating me from total freedom. Which will give in first: the battlement? Me? Or Freedom?”
